Gatsby - (includes spoiler - only read if finished)

At the end of the novel, 3 people are dead. Out of all the principle characters: Nick, Gatsby, Daisy, Tom, Myrtle, and George, all share at least some blame. In your opinion, which character is most at fault for the tragedies? Explain your reason.

  1. Although each major character played a big role in the occurrence of many tragedies in this novel, one really stood out to me. Daisy Buchanan, wife of Tom Buchanan and past lover of Jay Gatsby, was the main source of the problem. She succeeded in leaving Jay Gatsby while he was at war, cheating on her husband with Gatsby and killing Myrtle Wilson.

By leaving Gatsby while he was still at war, Daisy started the problem. It was obvious that Gatsby would go after Daisy to try and win her back. When Gatsby and Daisy reunite they fall back in love. Daisy is now cheating on her husband. If Daisy would have never left Gatsby none of this would have happened. Daisy would never have been driving Gatsby's car, and she would have never killed Myrtle. And if she hadn't killed Myrtle, George would not have gone after Gatsby believing that he was the killer. Gatsby's life could have been spared if Daisy did not leave him. George Wilsons life would have been saved as well if he had not killed Gatsby, and felt so guilty that he needed to commit suicide.

In the end, every tragedy comes back to Daisy. By leaving Gatsby and marrying Tom, she set herself up for trouble.

  2. I agree with Jenny. I think that Daisy is the character most responsible for the deaths. She was able to play multiple sides of the fence (and be in a big love triangle) without having any severe consequences, which enabled her to cause further damage. Although unintentional, the ending resulted in three deaths and Daisy still didn't take any responsibility, not even in killing Mrs. Wilson.

  3. I would also have to agree. Daisy in the end is the starting point of all the conflict. She was able to be in love with not only Tom but also Gatsby and suffer no consequences but also not having to choose between the two set up tension points between the two men. Moreover, in the end with the death of Myrtle caused all three deaths. If she would have just stayed with Tom and not fallen for Gatsby again or just kept her life the same, she would have perhaps saved all three deaths in the end. Also, her leaving Gatsby at fault for the death of Myrtle was something she could have prevented all by just taking responsibility for it, and thus saving all three lives.

  4. I do agree that Daisy was at fault for the deaths more so than any of the other characters. Daisy was the one who killed Myrtle by hitting her with a car. Naturally, her husband George is devastated. After discovering the owner of the car that killed his wife was Gatsby, George assumes Gatsby was the one driving. George then becomes angry and goes on the hunt for Gatsby. When he finally finds Gatsby, George shoots and kills him and then commits suicide.

All three characters would still be alive if Daisy hadn't killed Myrtle. Thus, George wouldn't have had a reason to kill Gatsby or commit suicide.

  6. I also feel that Daisy was the one to blame for all three of the deaths. It all falls back to what happened in the past when she left Gatsby for Tom. Due to her impatience and following the American Dream, riches and carelessness got in the way of love. As time rolled on, the consequences occurred after she feel back in love with Gatsby. Once she killed Murtle, one thing led to another as gatsby was murdered due to a misunderstanding, and left George to kill himself. If Daisy could have just stayed true to her heart in the beginning, and faithful to Gatsby, none of these mishaps would have taken place.

  7. I would have to agree with everyone else and say Daisy was responsible for the three deaths. If she had waited for Gatsby in the very beginning, rather than marrying Tom, she might not have been in the position to accidentally kill Myrtle. Since the other two deaths were direct results of Daisy's mistakes and Myrtle's death, they would have been avoided as well.

  9. I believe that many of the characters had their fair share of creating problems. All the main characters were linked through love, friendship, adultery, or hatred so they all contributed. However, I believe that the person most at fault is Tom Buchanan. His actions throughout the book led to the events that took place the days of Myrtle, Gatsby, and George's deaths. If Tom had stayed committed to his marriage and never started seeing Myrtle then Myrtle and her husband wouldn't evem be connected to the other main characters. Tom also was the one who made the decision to drive different cars home from the hotel, not realizing Myrtle had seen them previously that day. Although Daisy was the one that hit Myrtle with Gatsby's car, if Myrtle hadn't known Tom it would have never happened. Tom also contributed to Gatsby's death and george's suicide because he told George who owned the yellow car. Tom is responsible for creating problems with the main characters through the book, ultimately resulting in the Myrtle's, Gatsby's, and George's death.

  10. This is difficult for me because in my opinion both Tom and Daisy are at fault. The two of the them are very careless. By having an affair with Myrtle, Tom is the main link between the death of Myrtle, George, and Gatsby. He didn't stay faithful to Daisy thus giving Daisy a reason to seek out Jay and getting him tangled up in this mess. Also if he wasn't having a affair with Myrtle she have no reason to run in to the street (since she thought Tom was driving the car).

Daisy is part of the problem too. She was the one who ultimately killed Myrtle but she let Jay take the fall for her actions which gave George the excuse to kill Jay. She wasn't faithful to Tom and pulled Jay into this mess things. If she truly loved Jay she would of waited for him in the beginning or not get him involved in the first place. All of this could of been avoided if this couple was a little less careless.

  11. I believe that Jay Gatsby was most responsible for the tragedies at the end of the novel. While they all had their hand in it, Gatsby was the start of it all. When he showed up, he complicated the lives of Daisy and Tom. Tom turned to the defensive and Daisy was torn between the past and the present. Gatsby tried to bring the past back to make himself happy, but upset Daisy in the process and made her life more stressful, which led to the first accident. Afterward, if he had turned the car around or later turned in himself or Daisy he would have avoided two other deaths. If he had left the past where it belonged and accepted that Daisy had moved on, none of them would have been in the position that they were. While they all carried some of the guilt, it is my opinion that Gatsby carried the largest load.

  12. The person I believe who is most responsible for the tragedies is Mr. Gatsby. Gatsby started all of these atrocities by him acting upon his long-forgotten feelings of Daisy. Although Daisy was married to Tom Buchannon, Gatsby only cared about having another chance with Daisy, no matter how much strife could come from it. Daisy did love both Tom and Gatsby, but she deemed it more important to keep her marriage because she made a commitment to Tom. Gatsby was the most at fault for the tragedies due to his inability to let go.

  13. Throughout the story, I believe that Tom, Daisy and Gatsby shared some blame of these tragedies. Gatsby was blamed when he could not let go of the past and move on with his life like Daisy had done. Tom cheated on Daisy and lead Wilson to kill Gatsby when he told him that it was Gatsby's Car. However, the person most at fault for the three deaths, in my opinion would be Daisy. Since she was the person who killed Myrtle, and did not do anything to involve herself with the incident. Her careless personality, played a role with the other two deaths, as she let other people "clean up" her mess.

  14. I do believe that Tom was most to blame. Had Tom not been so carless with his wife and been having an affiar, i do believe that Wilson would not have been suspicion and moved away. Though Daisy is the one that ran her over, Tom had a ripple effect on Mrs. Wilson. It's so easy to say Diasy was carless, which she was, but Mertle and Wilson wouldn't have been fighting if Mertle never had an affair.

  15. Althogh all of the characters share some blame, I belive that Tom is most at fault for the tragidies. If he and Daisy had been happy in their marrige he would have never gotten invoved with Myrtle, wich, in turn, means that Myrtle would have never tried to run away from her husband, causing Daisy to hit her in Jay's car.

He is also at a direct fault for Jay's death. If he had told George the entire truth, perhaps he would be dead, not Jay. By telling George that Jay's car was the one that hit Myrtle, it lead him to belive that Jay was the one Myrtle was seeing on the side. Thus causing George to kill Jay out of uncontrolable jealousy and anger and then to kill himself out of greif.

  16. I would say Daisy is most responsible for these deaths because she was spoiled and was only in things for money. She wanted everything to be the way she wanted them to be, that's why she married Tom. If she had stayed with Gatsby through the thick and thin, she would never have accidentally killed Myrtle, which would never have led to the deaths of the others. She also never took responsibility for her actions and got away with it, if she had just made the right decisions, all of that could have been avoided.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I believe that while Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby are all responsible for the deaths of Myrtle, Wilson, and Jay Gatsby, Gatsby himself is most responsible. Yes, Daisy was careless and hit Myrtle Wilson, but the only reason she was so distraight in the first place was do to with Gatsby. Jay Gatsby was unable to let go and still incessantly believed that he and Daisy were meant to be together. His argument with Tom Buchanan, Daisy's husband, led Daisy to a state of nervousness and she couldn't handle the situation she was in. Therefore, Gatsby's obsession towards loving Diasy led her to the condition she was in when she hit Myrtle.

At the end of the book, Myrtle's death sends Wilson's into a vicious cycle of grieving. He is intent on finding out who killed his wife and wants them to pay. Since Gatsby is the one who was, indirectly, the cause of Myrtle's death, he is also the main reason for Wilson going crazy. In the end, Gatsby is the one who is most at fault for killing the Wilsons and, ultimately, himself.

  18. I believe that all of the principle characters are at fault in some way for the tragedies, with the exception of Nick. However, i feel that Daisy is most at fault. Like many of the other comments said, she was was the cause of a "love triangle" and was closest to many of the characters. She was the one who was driving Gatsby's car and who hit Myrtle. She also married Tom(who she didnt love as much as Gatsby) which caused a mess with Gatsby, Tom, and herself. I feel her character was selfish throughout the book, and still needed to grow up from her younger years. If she hadn't of married Tom, all the anger she had from driving home from New York after the big fight would've never existed and Daisy would've never killed Myrtle. And if she had not killed Myrtle, the many other tragedies that followed would have also not happened.

  19. Daisy is the most at fault for all these tragedies. The obvious one is that she personally killed Myrtle Wilson by hitting her with Gatsby's car and then fleeing the scene. Obviously she has no care or guilt or else she wouldve stayed at the scene. George Wilson, Myrtles wife, then discovered that the car that hit his wife belonged to Gatsby, which gave him a reason to kill Gatsby and then himself. If Daisy hadnt been driving the car, those three tragedies wouldnt have happened. Also, Daisy caused many tensions and problems being in a love triangle, which when it comes down to it all, led to each of the tragedies.

  20. Although the fault could be evenly distributed in different views to Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby, the one that hit me as most at fault was Daisy. She never thought of the consequences of her actions and never had the courage to tell the truth and take responsibility when all went wrong. She always managed to make a problem ,that could be solved by taking responsibility, far worse. She hit Myrtle, then was too afraid to face it and kept driving on, then because she had made the love triangle Gatsby ended up willing to take the blame if asked, and because of her love triangle she created it lead to Tom hating Gatsby so Tom told Wilson it was Gatsby who killed his wife. It was all a giant domino effect that could have been easily avoided if all of them weren't so careless.

  21. I agree with everyone in the idea that all of the characters were at fault for the deaths. However i believe that Daisey in the most at fault. She was the one driving to car and therefore was the direct cause of Myrtle's death. If she had never left Gatsby then Tom Wouldnt have been with her, therefore having no reason to tell Wilson that Gatsby killed Myrtle. This would have spared both the life of Wilson and Gatsby.

  22. I believe that Mr. Gatsby was most at fault and then Daisy and Tom come in next. Daisy was at fault because she was indeed the person driving the car that hit Myrtle but, if Tom hadn't been having an affair with Myrtle then she would have never run out in the street in the first place. However if Gatsby had been able to move on and let Daisy go then the entire situation could have been avoided, but he didn't which led to 3 different deaths. Gatsby's argument with Tom led to Myrtle's death, which caused Wilson to go crazy and hunt down the man that did it. He found Gatsby which led to 2 deaths. Nick is a different story though... He led Gatsby to Daisy with good intentions but it ended up going haywire. In the end Gatsby caused all 3 deaths.

  23. After tossing the question around, I have decided that I cannot pick just one character that I think is most at fault. Instead there are three; Gatsby, Daisy and Tom. Tom started the process by having constant affairs, sparking a bit of anger and retaliation in Daisy. Daisy then provoked it by fooling around with Gatsby. However, Gatsby never let go of Daisy, and put himself in between Tom and Daisy, causing even more turmoil. To me, the score is pretty even between them all.

  24. Sure every one of these five characters had a little bit of fault for the deaths, but in my oppinion Jay Gatsby and Tom contributed the most to them. First of all, Gatsby was the only reason any of the events happened in the story. In other words, Gatsby had been waiting for years to start all this drama, and as soon as he did tensions rose and there were 3 deaths. However, even though Jay Gatsby set everything off, Tom reacted to every single situation poorly. He was the reasons tensions rose in the first place. He was cheating on Daisy, and when Gatsby tried to take his wife, he acted like Daisy should still be his. Between the rising tensions caused by Tom, and Jay Gatsby to set them off, the tragedies were dealt.

  25. It is easy to determine the three out of five characters that had the most blame for the deaths in the story. Out of Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby, i believe Tom Buchanan was most at fault. If he wasn't seeing another woman, Myrtle, while still being wed to Daisy, then Myrtle and George would have no play in the story. Although primarily Daisy was the one who directly killed Myrtle, the accident occured because Myrtle ran out in front of the car she recognized as the car Tom had been driving earlier in the day. The situation is simple: if Tom was faithful to Daisy, then Myrtle's life would be spared, George would have no need to find the owner of the car that ran over Myrtle, (Jay Gatsby) and he would not have to have killed himself because of the grieving pain he felt after losing his wife. Tom Buchanan is the perpetrater.

  26. I agree with Brie, while you can assign blame to Daisy and Gatsby, Tom is the most to blame. Tom chooses to be unfaithful and to involve Myrtle. His affair caused Daisy to be unhappy and when she was reintroduced to Gatsby she felt like because tom was having an affair she was entitled to have one as well. Tom also taunted George, “I am going to sell you my car, oh no I’m not”, his game added stress to George’s life, so when he lost his wife he became out of control. Although daisy was driving when Myrtle was hit, Myrtle would not have run into the street if she did not recognize it as Tom’s car. Tom did not commit and murders, but he caused situations that led to them, making him the guilty party.

  27. In my popinion Daisy and Tom are both to blame. Yet Daisy made more mistakes that lead to the death of more people. She was careless in the way that she treated people, she was a heart breaker. By leaving Gatsby, getting married, then coming back to Gatsby, it caused a lot of turmoil. it left both Tom (Daisy's husband) and Jay with a sense of anger towards one another. Towards the end of the story Daisy kills Myrtle Gibson. If she had not left Jay or had gone and made it worse by leaving Tom as well, she would have never been in the situtaion she was when the murder occured. Because Daisy killed Myrtle while driving Gatsby's car, George , Myrtles husband, was fooled into thinking Gatsby had killed his wife and set out to kill him. In the end George ends up killing Gatsby and himself all because Daisy had so carelessly broken the hearts of both Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan at one point or another.

  28. Daisy is the main character to blame. Because Daisy cheated and wanted to be with Gatsby, it put her in the position of being behind the wheel and killing Myrtle. The killing of Myrtle also lead to the death of the Great Gatsby. George thought that Gatsby was the one driving the day of his wifes death and ended up murdering Gatsby because of it. These deaths could have been prevented if Daisy would have just been a truthful wife to her husband Tom.

  29. Of all the characters, I believe Daisy is most at fault for the deaths of Myrtle, Gatsby, and Wilson. Although she is presented as having "bright eyes and a bright passionate mouth," behind her lovely demeanor is a smirk. She gives the impression of being both loving and caring, but really she is hideous inside. She is the "golden girl," inspiring Gatsby's infatuation, but entirely self-absorbed.

If it weren't for Daisy's inconsistancy between her relationships with Gatsby and Tom the deaths would not have occured. Either she wouldn't have married Tom, or Gatsby would no longer be infatuated with her.

  30. In my opinion, Gatsby and Daisy seemed to be the most at fault for the tragedies. Although, I think Daisy was more at fault. It all began back when Gatsby left for war, and Daisy married Tom. She wasn’t faithful to Gatsby, and wanted money more than love. Then when she reunited with Gatsby, she realized how much better off he was, and went back to him. Leading to her driving Gatsby’s car and killing Myrtle, and then to the deaths of Gatsby and Myrtle’s husband, George. If it weren’t for Daisy, all this drama could have not happened.

  31. It is too hard to just pick one character so I am going to have to put the blame on all three equally. Tom started it off by having an affair with another women. That lead to Daisy wanting to get revenge on him, so she went to Gatsby. He had all the money and they were previously in love so he was the perfect prospect. Then Gatsby gladly accepted it because he still loved her which put him in between Tom and Daisy causing even more tensions. These factors ultimately led to the death of three people which could have been avoided, so the blame can be put on all three of them equally.

  32. In my opinion out of all the principle characters Daisy was at the most fault for the three deaths. Her unfaithfullness towards Tom led Gatsby to believe he would have the love of his life back. Her carelessness was portrayed once again when she was behind the wheel of a car that hits Myrtle Gibson. Myrtle's death causes an unexplainable amount of emotional pain for her husband(George). This causes him to become outraged towards Gatsby because he thought Gatsby was stealing his wife from him and was responsible for his wife's death. Because of this misinterpretion George decides to take his and Gatsbys life. As one can see, Daisy was the base cause of a major chain reaction that resulted three people to lose their life.

  33. 1. Though all the main characters had some influence on the murders in one way or another, I believe the character with the most fault is Tom. After experiencing his wife’s murder, George went mad, “crazy enough to kill me”(178) stated Tom. This leads me to believe that though Tom knew George was in no shape to confront his wife’s murderer, Tom confessed the name of the owner of the car due to his hatred for Gatsby.Tom didn’t directly murder Myrtle, and this was a loss of his own. However, Tom betrayed George’s trust, causing havoc between Myrtle and her husband, and eventually leading to her running from the garage.

  34. Out of all of the main characters I think that Daisy is most responsible for the three deaths. Her need for constant attention controlled her actions. Because Gatsby was in another country and unable to give daisy the attention she wanted she marries Tom. A few years later when Tom starts caring more about Myrtle, Daisy is more than willing to have an affair with Gatsby because unlike with Tom he gives her his full attention. She plays a big part in Myrtle’s death by hitting her with the car and then lets Gatsby take the blame, which gets him killed. Austin Fleming

I believe that Jay Gatsby was the heart of the problem. Although he had already been in love with Daisey, what he was doing was border-line obsessive. I mean he would get lost in a trance staring off across the water in Long Island looking at a light where Daisey lived? In my opinion, that is pretty weird. When a girl leaves you, it is time to just move on. Jay asking Nick to get them together just brought more problems. If Jay could have just moved on with his life and not brought her back in it, then the deaths would probably have been avoided bu instead he decided he needed to have her in his life. Many people have posted that Daisey was the root of the problem which is easily argued but if there was person who could have made none of it happen, it would be Jay Gatsby

  36. I agree that Daisy has a lot of the burden on her shoulders, but when Gatsby got back she was married. He should have respected that. Because he pushed so hard to get her back it ruined a lot of relationships and also caused a lot of deaths. Yes Daisy left him in the first place, but Gatsby pushing the envelope in a way he shouldnt have topped it all off.

  37. Although so many characters actions led to the events that transpired at the end I don't see Tom being one truly at fault. Yes, he was a hypocrite and careless, but I don't believe he is the blame for others actions. I believe the main person at blame here is of course Daisy. I do not blame Gatsby for following his dream of being with Daisy again. Daisy is the one to blame. Daisy could of easily said no to Jay. She could of easily said that she was married but instead she had to be greedy and take more than she could have. I think Daisy is very dumb in the first place for staying with Tom throughout the story when she knows he is having an affair. She drove both men into a jealous rage (especially Tom). It is her fault Myrtle died. But I do not blame her for Mr. Wilson's suicide and the killing of Jay. That I fully blame on Mr. Wilson. Sure, death is a hard thing, but the term 'a life for a life' does not exactly apply here. He is at fault for his own death and Jay's.

  38. Of all the characters to blame, I believe Daisy is most at fault for the 3 deaths. It was Daisy's fault that she hit and killed Myrtle. The death of Myrtle caused George to run off in a mad rage to look for the car that hit Myrtle. George came to the conclusion it was Gatsby's car that had killed Myrtle and proceeded to kill Gatsby and himself. If Daisy hadn't killed Myrtle in the first place, most likely, they would all still be alive.

  39. It's everyone's fault. Human desires, emotions, and carelessness just happened to react worse than usual, and three people ended up dead. Tom cheating on Daisy, Daisy cheating on Tom, Gatsby going after Daisy, Gatsby stupidly confronting Tom, Daisy running over Myrtle, George letting his wife walk all over him then going nuts when she died, Tom for suddenly acting as if he cared about Daisy, Daisy stupidly falling back in love with Tom, etc. The character least at fault is Nick, because he mostly tried to stay out of it.

  40. Although all of the five characters listed had a hand in the deaths, I believe Daisy is most at fault. Not only did Daisy hit and kill Myrtle causing Wilson's murderous rage, she also did not take any responsibility for it. Even though the death of Myrtle was unavoidable, if she would have stopped the car and faced Wilson directly Gatsby and Wilson would probably still be alive.

  41. Out of all the principle characters, I think it is Daisy's fault for the death of Myrtle, George, and Gatsby. Before Gatsby was rich, he asked Daisy to wait for him once he was out of the war, and she didn't. She hit Myrtle, and didn't take the blame for it. Myrtle's death made George kill Gatsby, and then himself. If she would have just waited for Jay, she would have never met Tom who met Myrtle who met George. And I don't know why Gatsby even loved her because he could have found someone who loved him for the way he already was. He went through all this trouble to get Daisy to stay with him, and she didn't even care.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Even though none of the lead characters were perfect, I feel that Daisy Buchanan is the most responsible for the deaths. If you go back far enough the whole situation could have been avoided if Daisy had not married Tom and instead waited for Gatsby to return. If Tom and Daisy were not married then maybe Tom would have been able to live a separate life with Myrtle. If none of the affairs had existed in the first place then there would not have been so much contempt and anger between the couples. Myrtle would not have wanted to leave Wilson and then Daisy would not have rushed out of the hotel speeding down the highway, running over the fleeing Myrtle.

  43. In my opinion, the person who is most at fault is Tom. I believe Tom is most at fault because Tom always seemed to cause some sort of argument. He didn’t seem to care about other people’s feelings. When his wife Daisy wanted to go to town he didn’t want to go especially since Gatsby said he would go. Tom also fought with Gatsby on who his wife really loved. He didn’t seem to think that his wife would love anybody else, and Daisy even admitted that she once loved Gatsby but Tom refused to hear that from her. Tom is also at fault because when Daisy drove Gatsby’s car she was the one who killed Myrtle Wilson and she may not have told Tom, but Tom didn’t know for sure Gatsby was driving the car, but he blamed it on him anyway.

  44. In my opinion i think that Daisy should be the one to blame. To start with Daisy got involved with more than one man and that never ends up well. Daisy caused many arguments among characters in the book thus creating a lot of tension. Even after turning Mrs. Wilson into road kill she did not take any of the blame.

  45. i feel like Tom Buchanan is the most to blame for all of these deaths. Tom caused the strained relationship between Mr. Wilson and his wife. Tom told Mr. Wilson that it was Gatsby's car. It was a series of mistakes that Tom made that led to all of these deaths even if he wasn't the one doing the killing.

  46. I agree with Connor about Tom being the one with the most blame. While Daisy was the one that couldn't decide or tell how Tom how she felt, Tom also was off with Myrtle while getting angry at Daisy for almost the exact same thing he was doing. While Tom was with Daisy he would go off and be with Myrtle while she lied to her husband about where she was, this shows that he doesn't respect marriages and being loyal in the first place. The relationship problems between Myrtle and George had to have had something to do with Tom even though George wasn't aware of what his wife was doing while she was "at her sisters house". He also wasn't a good husband or dad which caused Daisy to kind of drift away from him, and when Daisy realized Gatsby was back it was almost ineitable for her to fall in love with him again.

  47. While all of the characters mentioned played they're own part in the tragedy, I beleive that Daisy Buchanan played the biggest role. Daisy cheated on Tom and lead Gatsby to beleive that she loved him. Daisy was also the person who ran Myrtle Wilson down in the car, didnt stop or confess and allowed Gatsby to take the blame, for which he was later killed. While all of the characters in the story are selfish and arrogant to a degree Daisy is by far the worst, and it is mostly her fault that three people had to die.

  48. Although each of the six principle characters (Nick, Gatsby, Daisy, Tom, Myrtle, and George) share some of the blame for the deaths, I deem Daisy most at fault. Daisy instigated the entire tragedy. Her impatience and need for instant gratification were predecessors to the deaths of three individuals. If Daisy would have waited for Jay Gatsby to return from war, she wouldn’t be married to Tom; therefore, alleviating her struggle to have committed relationships between two different men. Daisy also did not take responsibility for running over Myrtle, which left Jay Gatsby the victim of George’s murderous rage. George, in turn, committed suicide.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Even though all of the characters played a huge role in the blame department, I believe that Daisy Buchanan played the biggest role. She was the one who caused all of the problems. When she hit Myrtle, she took no blame for it. She also led Gatsby on, and then pursued to get married. The whole time Gatsby never fell out of love with her, therefore leading to a whole bunch of unneeded drama due to her.

  50. Although each character is partially to blame for the tragedies, the primary bulk of the blame sits squarely on the shoulders of Daisy Buchanan. She is the reason that Jay Gatsby was wedging himself between her and her husband Tom, thus causing her to be daydreaming about the fight between the two men while driving leading to the demise of Myrtle Wilson. Thereafter, Gatsby is shot by the wrongly informed and vengeful George Wilson, husband of the late Myrtle, and promptly committing suicide shortly after murdering Gatsby.

  51. Well, I think we are all in agreement that Daisy Buchanan is to blame for the three deaths. Obviously she directly killed Myrtle, but she also indirectly killed Gatsby and Wilson by allowing Gatsby to take the blame for running over Myrtle. Clearly, they all played a part, but I believe that if not Daisy then Tom. Tom's haughty and womanizer persona caused him to be jealous of Gatsby, even though he was being completely hypocritical seeing as he was with Myrtle. I believe that even though Wilson had a gun when asking where Gatsby lived, Tom felt no remorse nor did he hesitate to tell him.
